For my senior capstone I set out to create a project that lives somewhere in-between physical and digital. I constructed a 3D apartment, a 2D hand painted animation, and used programs like Adobe After effects to overlay them to give the feeling that they inhabit the same world.
The apartment is built inside of two 16x20 cardboard boxes. This gives them the feeling of being impermeant, and fragile. The design of the rooms is made to feel like a "space in transition".
Being in my 20's, life at this stage feels very transitional, like at any moment it can change. Theres a lot of fear and uncertainty that comes along with this feeling, but at the same time it makes you apricate the moment for exactly what it is.
I wanted to highlight this theme of impermanence and carry it through the project. I expresses this idea also through the way I made the frames for animation portion.
each frame is painted on glass using oil paint. Its photographed and wiped away, then the next frame is painted. When the animation is completed, there are no physical remnants remaining. This method emphasis the process of creating art. It highlights imperfections, as well as challenges the artist to let go of control. At some in the process, you come to terms with the fact that it cannot be perfect, nor is it deigned to be, and suddenly it becomes more fun.
Art is meant to bring joy.
Process and Details
The project itself depicts a snapshot of life. The moment is insignificant, and small, and almost always forgotten. It's a day spent alone. Its peaceful, quiet, at times lonely, but beautiful and gains nothing from being shared.
It's simply a person enjoying coffee on a sunny day.
Nearly every bit of this space is built by hand, and designed by me. It’s constructed in two 16x20 cardboard boxes that I fitted with walls, windows, floors, and everything in between.
